There is one thing about us Nigerians: sometimes, we hear instructions clearly but still want to test whether the instruction really applies to us. 😂
"Please put your phone on flight mode."
And someone will look at the phone and say:
"Abeg, nothing dey happen. I have been using my phone on flight before." 😂
Another person will quietly continue chatting on WhatsApp.
Someone else will say:
"Let me just finish this call first."
My dear, finish the call after landing. 😂✈️
This may sound funny, but there is a serious reason airlines ask passengers to follow instructions concerning mobile phones and other electronic devices.
What Does Your Phone Have to Do With an Aircraft?
Your mobile phone communicates by sending and receiving radio-frequency signals.
An aircraft also depends on radio-based systems for communication, navigation and other important functions.
Modern aircraft are designed with strong protection against electronic interference, and airlines have procedures to manage the use of electronic devices on board. However, passengers are still required to follow the airline's instructions and use flight mode when requested.
So, it is not correct to say that one passenger's phone will automatically make a plane crash.
That is not how aviation safety works.
The real point is that aviation involves many systems working together, and reducing unnecessary electronic transmissions is one of the precautions airlines use to minimise potential interference and maintain a safe operating environment.
Why Do Airlines Ask You to Use Flight Mode?
When your phone is in normal mobile-network mode, it keeps searching for and communicating with cellular networks.
When the aircraft is flying at altitude, your phone may also try to connect to different ground stations as it moves.
Flight mode stops the normal cellular connection.
Depending on the airline and the device, you may still be allowed to turn Wi-Fi or Bluetooth back on after switching to flight mode, but always follow the specific instructions given by the airline and cabin crew.
The Nigerian "Nothing Will Happen" Attitude
This is where our famous stubbornness sometimes enters the story. 😂
The cabin crew says:
"Please switch your phone to flight mode."
You hear it.
You understand it.
You look at your phone.
Then you say:
"But what can my small phone do to a whole Boeing?" 🤣
My brother, my sister, that is not the question.
The question is: why ignore a simple safety instruction when following it costs you absolutely nothing?
Your phone will still be there after takeoff.
Your WhatsApp message will still be there after landing.
That phone call can wait.
That Facebook arguments can definitely wait. 😂
Safety Instructions Are Not Suggestions
When you board an aircraft, you are entering an environment where hundreds of people are depending on carefully designed procedures.
That is why cabin crew give instructions about:
- Seat belts
- Electronic devices
- Emergency exits
- Carry-on baggage
- Seat positions during takeoff and landing
- Safety demonstrations
These instructions are there for a reason.
You don't have to understand every technical detail before following them.
My Advice to Nigerian Travellers
The next time you hear:
"Please switch your phone to flight mode."
Don't be that passenger who wants to prove that nothing will happen. 😂
Just switch it to flight mode.
It takes a few seconds, costs you nothing, and allows the crew to do their job without unnecessary distractions.
There are many things we Nigerians can argue about.
Flight safety should not be one of them. ✈️💙
