Many Nigerians have been complaining about the sudden increase in domestic flight ticket prices, especially now that the festive season is close. Because of this, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission FCCPC has started an investigation to find out why the prices are so high.
The FCCPC said it has received many complaints from travellers who believe the ticket prices on some routes, especially to the South East and South South, are now too expensive. Many people feel the prices are not fair anymore.
Even though the FCCPC does not set or control the prices of airline tickets, the commission has a duty to protect consumers from any unfair or wrong actions. For this reason, they are now checking how airlines decide their prices and if anything suspicious is going on.
This is also not the first time the FCCPC has questioned airlines. Earlier this year, they invited Air Peace after passengers complained that they were not getting refunds for cancelled flights. That issue was separate, but it shows that the commission is watching the aviation sector very closely.
The FCCPC said it wants the market to be fair and open and to make sure that travellers are not taken advantage of. They want to confirm if the high prices are normal or if some airlines are increasing fares in a way that is against the law.
What This Means for Travellers
If the FCCPC finds anything unfair or wrong, they may take action. This could help bring more honest and reasonable ticket prices, especially during the holiday period when many people travel.
For now, the FCCPC said the investigation will continue and they will share updates as more information comes out.
