TRAVEL UPDATE: New UK Entry Requirement for U.S. Citizens – What You Need to Know!

Are you a U.S. citizen planning a trip to the United Kingdom in 2025? There’s a new travel requirement you must know about before packing your bags!

Introducing the UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)
As of January 8, 2025, the UK government now requires all U.S. travelers to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before visiting. This applies to short stays for tourism, business, visiting family, or short-term study (up to 6 months).

Who needs it? All U.S. passport holders entering the UK for short visits.

When to apply? At least a few days before travel. Applications opened on November 27, 2024.

Validity: Your ETA lasts 2 years or until your passport expires—whichever comes first.

This new system is part of the UK’s transition to a more digital and secure border, similar to the U.S. ESTA program which UK travelers use when visiting the United States.

What about U.S. entry rules for British?

UK citizens can still travel to the U.S. visa-free under the Visa Waiver Program, but must apply for an ESTA before traveling. So both sides now require digital pre-approval before takeoff!

Why this matters:
Skipping the ETA can result in denied boarding at the airport. Make sure you or your loved ones apply early and stay travel-ready.

Stay informed. Stay prepared. And as always, safe travels!
